South Africa is well served by two vibrant organizations promoting the Bible: The Bible Society of South Africa (BSSA) and Catholic Bible Foundation of South Africa (CBFSA).

The BSSA has been bringing the Word of God to South Africans since 1820 and it is a member of the United Bible Societies, a family of 146 Bible societies operating in over 200 countries.

The Mission of BSSA is to provide affordable Bibles for everyone in their own language and in suitable format so that all may experience the life-giving message of the Word.? Last year it became possible for the first time to distribute the complete Bible in all of our countrys eleven official languages.

The slogan for BSSA is A BIBLE FOR EVERYONE.? Some idea of this project can be gleaned? from the fact that last year (2013) more than 1 million Bibles were distributed, and more than half a million free cell-phone Bibles were downloaded.? The range of Bible formats is a tribute to the zeal and imagination of BSSA: ordinary print, large print, Braille, audio, internet, cell-phone and e-Bible

The CBFSA, by comparison, is a new boy on the block.? The inspiration for CBFSA came from Elandskop in KZN. Two Holy Family Sisters visited Mrs Mdaweni in her very frugal house and asked how they might be of help.? All Mrs Mdaweni asked for was a Bible.? Bishop Vestraete O.M.I. was pondering the same idea: what people want ?and need- is access to the Word of God.? For twenty years now the CBFSA has been living up to its mandate to help people enter into a living and dynamic relationship with the Word of God, Jesus Christ, through the Word of God in the Scriptures.

In making the Bible known the strategy of CBFSA is focussed on Scripture Programmes for adults, youth and children.? It has offices in Johannesburg and Durban and a website:?

The purpose of todays Bible Sunday is to draw attention to the centrality of Scripture in everything we do and the critical role it plays in our lives.? Bible Sunday encourages a Christian way of life inspired and based on the Word of God.
