Goodbye

(Goodbye)

This Wednesday (June 4th) will be a significant day in the life of Father Tony Hunt, C.Ss.R.?? Likewise it will be significant in the life of the Redemptorist Province of South Africa and for the many many friends of Fr Tony.? On that day he will return permanently to the United Kingdom to become a member of the Redemptorist Community at Bishop Eton, Liverpool.

Fr Tony came to South Africa 46 years ago and has spent 35 of those years in the Rustenburg area.? He lived in Redemptorist communities all over what is now the Diocese of Rustenburg and was a dynamic missionary to the Tswana people of the district.? He also served as Director of the Redemptorist Junior Seminary in Phokeng and was superior of local communities and Vicar of the Redemptorist Unit of South Africa.

Since 2004 he has been in the Cape; at first in Retreat where he became Superior and Parish Priest and then for the last five years here in the Monastery.? He also had a short time giving parish Missions around the country.

Despite poor health he has helped in our parish as chaplain to the Legion of Mary and was always willing to assist with confessions and with public Masses.? His exceptional gift of relating well to people, especially those in need, has meant that he has had a ministry to the many people who sought him out in times of distress

The parish will miss him and the Redemptorist community are missing him already as he takes leave of so many of his friends.?? We wish him every blessing on this new stage in his journey of faith.? Our prayer is that his health will hold out and allow him to enjoy being near his brothers and sisters in Liverpool.?? And I cannot resist the thought that he will also be nearer to a certain football team whose motto has been vividly live out by Fr Tony

May you never walk alone.

Fr Sean Wales, C.Ss.R.
