Many years ago there was a Notre Dame Sister teaching in the Notre Dame School in this parish.  Her name was Wendy Beckett and she has become a household name in many parts of the world due to her Television programmes and her books on art.

Sister Wendy Beckett now lives in England as a hermit, but a hermit with a difference.   Her passion for art and for religious art in particular, has become a ministry to many who would never darken the door of a church. One of her charming books is called “ENCOUNTERS WITH GOD” and it is the story of her quest for 8 ancient icons of Mary, Mother of God.

This being Mary’s month, we are devoting all the Thursdays (except Ascension Thursday) to Icons of Mary.

We are fortunate to have Brother Richard, a classical iconographer, as part of our community and he will lead us in deepening our love for Mother Mary through some of the great Icons of Mary.  In the course of the month we will deal with icons of the Way (Hodegetria), icons of tenderness (Eleousa) and icons of the Passion (Strastnaia), ending with our own icon of Our Mother of Perpetual Help.

You are invited to join us at these May devotions in honour of our Blessed Lady and to explore the wondrous richness of this form of prayer.  Sister Wendy Beckett concludes her book with the attractive claim that an encounter with an icon is an encounter with God.  I hope that our little effort this month will bring us all closer to Jesus through Mary.
