Did you know that at least 70% of seafarers are Catholics?
Did you know that this year alone pirates have high-jacked 15 ships in the Gulf and taken 300 seafarers captive?
Did you know that seafarers are promised a special bonus for going through pirate-infested waters but that such bonuses are rarely paid?
Did you read about the container ship left to idle in False Bay –and the plight of the seafarers?
Did you know that 25% of all seafarers come from the Philippine Islands (a country which is 98% Catholic)?
Do you realise that 90% of imports/exports are done by sea –to the benefit of the whole country?
Do you know that there is a world-wide Catholic outreach to seafarers called “APOSTLESHIP OF THE SEA”?
Now you know what AOS stands for!!
The AOS provides Mass, Confessions, counselling, comfort and support to seafarers who are in need during their visits to our ports. In the seafaring world the commodities transported are often given higher profile and attention than the seafarers themselves. Seafarers’ rights and dignities are often neglected.
Today we have an opportunity to support AOS in this vital outreach to our fellow Catholics who are often in great need. Today we pray for all seafarers and for the ministry of AOS –and we can help in a practical way too!!
Please be generous at the Second Collection.
